HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-27-2016 City Council Meeting MinutesSTATE OF ALABAMA )( COUNTY OF BALDWIN )( The City Council, City of Fairhope, met in regular session at 6:00 p.m., Fairhope Municipal Complex Council Chamber, 161 North Section Street, Fairhope, Alabama 36532, on Monday. 27 June 2016. Present were Council President Jack Bun'ell, Councilmembers: Rich Mueller, Diana Brewer, and Kevin Boone, Mayor Timothy M. Kant, City Attorney Marion E. Wynne, and City Clerk Lisa A. Hanks. Councilmember Michael A. Ford was absent. There being a quorum present. Council President Burrell called the meeting to order. The invocation was given by Associate Pastor Chris Peters of Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Councilmember Brewer moved to approve minutes of the 20 June 2016, regular meeting; minutes of the 20 June 2016, work session; and minutes of the 20 June 2016, agenda meeting. Seconded by Councilmember Boone, motion passed by the following voice votes: AYE - Mueller, Brewer, and Boone. NAY-None. ABSTAIN - Burrell. Mayor Kant addressed the City Council and reminded everyone about the Fourth of July Celebration and the Fun Run in the Park on Saturday. He also thanked everyone for their support in his mother's passing. Council President Burrell gave his condolences once again to Mayor Kant. Kerry Flowers, Chairman of the Education Advisory Committee, addressed the City Council and gave a Power Point Presentation titled "Envisioning the Future of Fairhope's Education." Mr. Flowers stated the three main questions for the City of Fairhope were: (1) Are we providing clear direction? (2) Are we making progress? (3) Does our funding make a difference? Dr. Ash and Jim Williams from the Akribos Consulting Group addressed the City Council spoke on the Top 10 Schools in Alabama; academics and core expenditures; Fairhope Roundtable (organization-wide data meetings); and recommendations and/or options for the City of Fairhope. The recommendation was to hire a city employee as CunJculum Director and to request the vote for a Fairhope School Tax District. Mr. Flowers presented the recommendation of the Education Advisory Committee: $300,000.00 from this year's budget to be added to the $350,000.00 appropriation in the budget for FY 2016-2017 for a total of $650,000.00; for permanent funding secured for the FY 2017-2018. He said the goal of 5-10-20 is to have all five schools in the top 10 by the year 2020.
