May 13, 2026
3 p.m. in the City Hall Conference Room
161 N Section Street
Members present: Paul Fontenot , Joanne Hogan , Knox McMurphy, Carol Sullivan, May Moss
Parker, Skip Jones and Craig Tappan. Absent: Audra Warren , Will Mastin, Councilmember
Joshua Gammon.
Paul Fontenot called the meeting to order at 3:09 p.m. The Minutes of the meeting for May 13,
2026, were considered and approved with a motion by Skip Jones , seconded by May Moss
Parker, and unanimously passed.
There was general discussion among the committee members and a recap of Arbor Day 2026.
Comments /Questions from the committee:
• How many trees were ordered?
• How many trees were given out?
• Make sure all the trees are labeled.
• Have someone monitor number of trees that were given out.
• Get a headcount of how many attend Arbor Day
• How many trees were left over?
• Committee requested trees be ordered in August of 2026.
• Committee requested a list of the trees ordered for Arbor Day 2026 to review at the next
meeting.
Paul Fontenot shared that the Planning & Zoning Commission pre se nted the City Council with a
packet of zoning changes, landscape plans , and selection of trees that can be removed . The list
was divided into priority/proposed items . The goal of sharing the infonnation was to have the
new regulations in place prior to lifting the moratorium .
The committee members requested the November 5, 2026, meeting be held at Flying Creek
Nature Preserve and Justin Hammers give th e committee a tour. There was also discussion about
hav ing a seminar series at the Flying Creek Nature Preserve. The Tree Committee offered to help
publici ze it.
There being no further busines s, the meeting was adjourned at 3:53 p.m.

-Seedlings for Arbor Day giveaway were discussed. Justin Hammers procured a list
of tree seedling availability and committee discussed which trees were appropriate
and ava i lable. The trees that were settled upon were as follows
Red Maple, Red Buckeye, Yellow Poplar, Ashe Magnolia, Sweetbay Magnolia,
Blackgum, Shortleaf Pine, Longleaf Pine, Loblolly Pine , Sycamore , Sawtooth Oak ,
Swamp White Oak, Willow Oak, and Post Oak.
-Justin Hammers was tasked with ordering 100 seedlings of each of these trees, with
the exception of Red Maple -which he was to order 200-because of that varieties
popularity at the 2025 tree give away. (Justin has since ordered these trees on
11/13/25 from Super ior Trees Inc .)
