Recreation Project Updates: Pat White informed the Board of the following
updates:
• Youth softball will have a covered batting cage structure going up soon. We had money
budgeted for a playground and after discussing it with their board members, they
requested we use that money to build them a covered cage and pitching station. Council
approved the budget adjustment at the last council meeting, and we have a contractor
lined up to get the project moving.
• The soccer complex will have a new pavilion structure going in-pending council
approval. After months of getting drawings approved, meeting with contractors , and
getting competitive quotes on the initial location of a pavilion , soccer board members
expressed their desire to have it in another location closer to the concessions building.
After more drawing approvals, meeting with contractors, and receiving quotes, we have
a plan and a contractor to move forward pending council approval.
• The shade structures installation process at all youth baseball fields at Volanta Park
started this week. They anticipate being finished by the first of next week.
• The Fairhope Pool Rehabilitation project bid is out for advertisement. The bids are
scheduled to be opened on 10/23. Intent is to get it on the Council meeting on 11/10 for
approval to be able to have a contract and notice to proceed by December.
Recreational Operations Updates:
• Youth football held their 1st Saturday of tackle football season on September 6th. The
reports received were that parking and traffic flow were horrendous, and the lines were
long for the bathrooms.
• Youth baseball started their Fall season games this Monday night after giving their
game schedule to us on Friday of last week. We are working with all leagues to improve
the line of communication so that we are better prepared.
• Youth softball started their Fall season games last night at Founders Park.
• This is homecoming week, and we will host Robertsdale this Friday night at WC Majors
Field. The field crew is working hard on getting the new logo in the center of the field
painted as well as the ribbons that are painted on the field every September for childhood
cancer awareness month.
• Would like to thank Becky and Juana for their willingness to help with the opening weeks
of the new Nature Preserve Park. They have been going to the park on Sundays to check
on the bathrooms, trash cans, watering landscaping, and overall condition of the park and
trails.
• Update on stadium press box: agreement was made on redoing the existing press box
and that should be able to get bid out soon.
• Highway 13/32 project status-will now be part of a sub-committee that will include Debra
Flowers, Josh Warren, and Mike Baugh.
• Recreation’s 5-year plan will now be part of a sub-committee that will be headed by
Cathy Hudson.
