In Joe Kelley’s absence, Vice-Chair David Johnson called the meeting to order and the May 7th
meeting minutes were approved.
For Fairhope High, Jon Cardwell presented further modifications to the funding request made in
April for the “25-’26 school year, removing one business teacher from the 3-mill-funded budget
items, and requesting $22K for a part-time intervention teacher to be funded with K-1 money
(changes in bold below). Motion to approve request as presented was made by Trisha Gunnells
and seconded by Danielle Mashburn-Myrick; motion passed.

For Fairhope East, Christina Stacey presented modifications to the funding request made in
April for the “25-’26 school year, removing an instructional coach ($84,188), increasing funding
for substitutes to $30K, and adding $1200 for white boards and $500 for a heavy-duty scanner –
all from 3-mill funding (changes in bold below). Tricia Gunnells moved to approve the request
as presented and Kathy Sternenberg seconded the motion; motion passed.

For J. Larry Newton, Tonya Harrelson presented modifications to the funding request made in
April for the “25-’26 school year, adding $62K for 2 part-time reading and math instructors,
asking that $31K come from carry-over funds and $31K come from K-1 funds (changes in bold
below). Also, reduction of line item for intervention teacher from $100,369 from $104,012 and
increase of line item for part-time instructor from $24,805 to $31,004 is requested (changes in
bold below). Kathy Sternenberg moved to approve the request as presented and Tricia Gunnells
seconded the motion; motion passed.

for the “25-’26 school year, removing $88,371 for the social worker position and $25,000 for a
tutor position; and adding $77,034 for 2 instructional aides and an additional $15,000 for
professional development – all from 3-mill funding (changes in bold below). Tricia Gunnells
moved to approve the request as presented and Danielle Mashburn-Myrick seconded the
motion; motion passed.

There was no new business to be addressed. Following various announcements and discussion
David Johnson adjourned the meeting at 4:55. The next meeting, if needed, will be on

School Summary: Fairhope East identified reading and math as areas in need of improvement as based
on the ACAP reading and math scores. We intentionally seek to help those who score below grade level
by providing additional time and focused intervention each week. Additionally, we identified the
concept of STEAM as a cross-curricular experience based on hands-on engagement, discovery, and the
scientific method – Ask – Imagine – Plan – Create – Improve.
Below are requests to the Commission for Fairhope Schools for the approximate $750,000 designated

master the standards being taught. STEAM at
FEES is accessible and inclusive for all students
and the STEAM lab fosters a culture of
curiosity, exploration, and innovation among
students. The STEAM teacher forges
partnerships with many businesses,
organizations, and experts in the STEAM field
to provide authentic learning experiences,
mentorship opportunities, and resources for
teachers and students.
Part-Time Interventionist
$26,000.00 Reading Intervention/3rd
Grade LAPS
The role of the Intervention teacher at
Fairhope East is to provide targeted support
and instruction for any student who
struggles academically in the area of
Reading, specifically 3rd grade. The
Interventionist collects data through various
progress monitoriting programs and tools
and works with the teachers in gaining
additional data. While we are under the
Literacy Act, we have found the need to
assign one PTI to the 3rd Grade students
who require additional intervention,
assessments, and documentation.

with teachers and students to provide
individualized support and instruction,
which benefits Fairhope East as a whole.

$84,188.00 Instructional Coach The Instructional Coach at Fairhope East
supports teachers in improving their
instructional practices and ultimately
enhancing student learning outcomes. The
Instructional Coach models lessons,
participates and guides with co-teaching,
provides feedback and data analysis, and
participates in PLCs with the teachers.
Additionally, she establishes coaching cycles
to provide ongoing support and guidance
over time to address specific instructional
challenges or goals.
ELL Interventionist $96,883.00 The role of the ELL Interventionist is to
provide targeted support and instruction to
students who are learning English as a
second language. With intentional, specific
small group instruction using research-based
strategies, the ELL Interventionist focuses on
language development, academic skills, and
content-area knowledge. Our ACAP scores
show the subpopulation of Hispanic/
ELL/Limited English Proficiency performing
below proficient standards. The ELL
Interventionist also serves other FEES
students through Reading and Math
Intervention, but the priority would be our
ELL population. This person is fluent in
Spanish and trained in various Reading
programs to implement intervention (SPIRE,
Phonics 1st, LETRS)
Full Time
Paraprofessional
$47,992.00 With the constantly evolving needs of our
student population, we feel it is necessary
for an additional full-time paraprofessional
unit to help serve various populations. We
have many students entering school with
identified needs, and being able to provide
intervention at an early age is extremely
beneficial.
Institutional CLAS
Membership
$1200.00 We are asking for our membership to the
CLAS professional organization to continue
to be paid for by 3 mil funds. This is where
we participate and engage in professional
development for administration, gain PLUs,
and join a community of continued learning.
PLC Conference $5,000 We would like for 5 teachers and 2
administrators to attend the PLC conference
in Mobile in June. This interactive workshop
focuses on how PLC’s can increase academic
achievement, improve relations, and
enhance student learning.

involves working with teachers,
