HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-14-1983 Regular Meeting442 STATE OF ALABAMA COUNTY OF BALDWIN The City Council, City of Fairhope, met in regular session at 5:30 p.m., Fairhope Municipal Complex, 1616 North Section Street, Fairhope, Alabama 36532, on Monday, 14 February 1983. Present were Mayor James P. Nix; Councilmemb'ers Roy C. White, Trisha Nelson, David E. Bishop, Michael A. Ford, and Sam E. Box; City Attorney Jim Reid and City Clerk Evelyn Phillips. Mayor Nix called the meeting to order and Councilwoman Nelson gave the invocation. Minutes of the 24 January 1983 regular session were duly approved. Councilwoman Nelson introduced the following Resolution and moved for its adoption. Seconded by Councilman Bishop, motion passed unanimously: Resolution No. 67-83 WHEREAS, this Resolution serves as an expression of sympathy to the family of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and as formal recognition of his contribution to the youth of Fair - hope, and WHEREAS, Coach Bryant served as a role model to young people as he stressed excellence in all endeavors, including athletic, and WHEREAS, eight young men from Fairhope played football for the University of Alabama and.witnessed Coach Bryant`s Leadership firsthand. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED in further recognition and remembrance of Coach Bryant, the City Council officially names the new Aero-Chief fire truck "BEAR" and we know this fire truck will serve.as a reminder of the strength of Paul Bryant through the years of its service to Fairhope Given under•my hand and seal this 14 itm, Q, /.2) City Cl trk i day of February, 1983. � /I)L 443 Councilman Ford introduced, and moved for the adoption of, the following Resolution. Seconded by Councilman Box, motion passed unanimously: Resolution No. 68-83 WHEREAS, the City of Fairhope did collect $23,038 for Business Licenses from concerns located in the Police Juris- diction of the City, and WHEREAS, the Fairhope Police Department did expend the sum of $124,685 for police protection; and the Fire Depart- ment did expend the sum of $8,890 for fire protection; in the Police Jurisdiction of the City, THEN THEREFORE BE ,IT RESOLVED, that the expense of Fire and Police protection in the Police Jurisdiction of the City of Fairhope, Alabama, did exceed the revenue received from Business Licenses issued to locations in said Police Juris- diction. ADOPTED THIS 14th DAY OF FEB ity.0 rk Mr. Al Johnson of the Recreation Board came before the Council with two requests: '(1) authorization to seek permission from Riviera Utilities to use their vacant lot on the corner of Young Street and Nichols Avenue for.parking. Councilman Box moved to Councilman Box moved to approve this request. Seconded by Councilman Ford, motion passed by the following vote: AYE - Box, Ford, Nelson, and Bishop. NAY none. ABSTAIN White. (2) authorization to move No Parking Signs on west side of Mershon Street next to Stimpson Field some 15 feet further apart. A dele- gation of property owners was present and -this request was generally discussed. No action will be taken until further study. Councilman White reported on the rezoning request by Mr. Robert Van Iderstine. The Planning & Zoning Board recommends approval"of this request. Councilman. White moved to hold the Council public hearing as soon as publication requirements,can be met. (March 14th): Seconded by Councilman Box, motion passed unanimously. The following appointments were duly made: 444 Councilman Box moved to reappoint A.J. Koppersmith and Norris Smith to the Harbor Board, each for a 2-year term. Seconded by Councilwoman Nelson, motion passed unanimously. Councilman Bishop moved to reappoint Jack Lucey and Peyton Walker to the Parking Authority, each for a 2-year term. Seconded by Councilman White, motion passed unanimously. Councilwoman Nelson moved to appoint Howard Wulff and to reappoint Phil Dyson, Andrew Lindsey, and Lee Rencher to the Com- munity Appearance Committee, each for a 3-year term. Seconded by Councilman Ford, motion passed unanimously. On the Personnel Board: Councilman Box moved to reappoint Doris Dial for a 2 year term. Seconded by Councilwoman Nelson, motion passed unanimously. Councilman Box moved to reappoint C.E. Nelson for a 3 year term Seconded by Councilman Bishop, motion passed unanimously. Councilman White moved to appoint Jerry Bryant for a 4 year term. Seconded by'Councilman Box, motion passed unanimously. Councilman Box moved to reappoint Bill Johnson for a 5 year term. Seconded by Councilman Ford, motion passed unanimously. A letter from the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation was read stating they would agree to allow the City to use the former library building and area for a Public Building. A 5 year agreement will be drawn up and sent for execution eliminating the stipulation that the building must be used as a library. Councilman Box moved to pay bills as presented.
