HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-12-1972 Regular MeetingSTATE OF ALABAMA COUNTY OF BAL DW IN The City Council of the City of Fairhoa met in regular session at the City Administration Building, 397 Fairhope Ave., on Monday, June 12, 1972 at 7:30 P.M., with the following mem- bers present; Mayor R. C. Macon, Councilmen: James P. Nix, John A. Robertson, Henry G. Bishop and Sam E. Box. Councilman Robert H. Cowen being. absent. Minutes of previous regular meeting were approved. Dr. E. C. Dillabough requested street light on corner of Nichols and Section Street, also requested that City check man- hole in center of lot owned by him. Request referred to City Superintendent for report to Council. Mr. Elmer Vick, Fairhope Jaycees, requested City to take full page color ad in their July 4th pamphlet at a cost of $180.00. Motion by Councilman Robertson seconded by Councilman Box that City take ad as requested. Motion carried. Mrs. Martha Hill representing Bicycle Committee presented a report of their meeting with request that action be taken on the following: Paving trail on Section (Oak Street to Gayfer). Paving trail on one side of Gayfer from Section to Bon Secour. Paving trail on one side of Volanta from Bon Secour to ball parks. Paving trail (for walkers or for both walkers and bicy- cles) on Church St;, from Fig to Fels. Fill gully on Bon Secour. n Fill Gully at end of Liberty or make footbridge to cross into school property._ Reduce speed on Fairwood, Liberty, Cliff,Bayview (betweed Magnolia and Fairhope Ave.). School, (between Morphy and Fairhope Ave.) and Bon Secour to 20 mph. Provide bike racks at tennis courts, end of Orange St., at the beach, Middle School, High School and downtown, also swimming pool. Allocate funds for installation of necessary signs on trails if these are not paid for by civic groups. Barney Shull, Chairman of Recreation Board reported that Recreation Board has plans for walk ways and bicycle trails in Green Park. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Bishop that City prepare walkways and bicycle trails at Greeno Park according -to Recreation Board plans,using summer employees under O.E.O. program. Motion carried. Chairman Shull reported that tennis courts at Greeno Park were completed and official opening date has been set for Saturday, June 24, 1972. Motion by Councilman Bishop seconded by Councilman Box that City accept tennis courts, authorize payment of contractor's bill and authorize City Attorney to draw up Ordinance setting fine for anyone damaging courts. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Rpbertson seconded by Councilman Bishop that City purchase 48 quartz lights for Greeno Park Tennis Courts. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Bishop seconded by Councilman Box that $37,000.00 be transferred from 1970 Street Improvement Acct., to the General Obligation Warrant and Interest Savings Account, and waive monthly payment of $3,416.66 until such time as pay- ment is required to meet terms of Warrants. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Bishop seconded by Councilman Box that Rev. R. A. St Pierre be reappointed to Library Board for five year term ending May 4, 1977. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Robertson that City advertise for public hearing at regular meeting of the City Council on July 10, 1972 on rezoning from R-2 to B-2 the Carrie Young Estate Tract located at the S. W. Corner of Young and Middle Street. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Robert- son that City advertise for public hearing at regular meeting of the City Council on July 10, 1072 on rezoning to M-1 property on Highway 98 at Parker.Road. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Nix thkt City place $50.00 Ad in Masonic Day. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Bishop seconded by Councilman Box that Mr. Cecil Pitman be reappointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission for a six year term ending May 25, 1978. Motion car- ried. Motion by Councilman Bishop seconded by Councilman Box that $20,000.00 from Electric and $10,000.00 from Gas be trans- ferred to General Fund for Tennis Courts and lights. Motion car- ried. Motion by Councilman Bishop seconded by Councilman Nix that bills be approved for payment. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Robert- son that General Corrosion Services bill in the amount of $1,350.00 be approved for payment. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Nix seconded by Councilman Box that City join Baldwin County Civil Defense Operation Readiness Program at a cost of $12.00 a month. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Nix that City ask for bids on load of 6" Cast Iron Pipe. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Nix that city ask for bids on load mixed gas pipe. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Box seconded by Councilman Nix that Gene Fuqua attend Southeast Natmral Gas Distribution Short Course at the University of Alabama, June 20-22, 1972. Motion carried. Motion by Councilman Robertson seconded by Councilman Nix that Council take Bicycle Committee Report under study and that the Committee be com- mended for their report. The following Ordinance was introduced in writing by Mr. Box and A,'d in full by the City Clerk: Motion by Councilman Nix seconded by Councilman Robertson that the meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
