HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-09-1956 Regular MeetingI STATE OF ALABAMA County of Baldwin The City Council of the City of Fairhope met in regular session at the City Hall, Monday, January 9, 1956 with the following members present: Mayor E. B. Overton, City ManagerC. B. Niemeyer, Councilmen. M. 0. Berglin, L. E. 'Blatchford, R. C. Macon and J. D. Mason. Councilman R. H. Brown being absent. The minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved as read. A group of residents from South Section and Nichols Street area met with the Council to protest the issueing of a building permit to Mr. Walter Poser to entpand his printing business in this area. Those who attended -the meeting and their complaints are as follows: Mr. J. F. Doss, 354 S. Section Street - Noise from the presses and the paper and trash blowing all over the neighborhood. Mrs. Marie McCartney - S. Section Street Same as Mr. Doss %AaIso.-that it reduces the value of residential property with a printing press in a residential neighborhood. Mrs. W. M. Culver - 361 S. Section Street - Unfair to residents in this neighborhood to allow. -a business there. Mrs. Jack Burkett - 361 Ann Street - Bought property with the press there. Any addition would run along the side of their garage creating a parking problem. Mrs. Ernest Thompson - Ann Street. New resident - Addition would create a parking problem. Mr. J'. Bethea - 307 Ann Street - Definitely against any expansion of the business - Causes current fl!uxuation -More empCoyees speeding to and from work - Fire Hazard - Trash and paper blowing all over - Noise from press annoying especially during the summer months. Mr. Harold S.. Seberson - 312 Nichols Street - Presses going until 60 and 11 o'cloisk at night. Breezeway on home was started and never completed and felt that the business should be trasnfe:rred to business district instead of residentiali. Mr. Overton told the residents that no permit wou H be issued without the residents of the neighborhood being consulted first. Motion by C ouncilman Mason seconded' by Councilman Berglin that the City accept plat of the Fairhopc Single Tax Corporation of Resubdivision of Block 39 to 44 and 46 to 57, Division 4 of Fairhope Single Tax Corporation lands as recorded in Misc. Book I, Pages 320,321, Probate Records, Baldwin County and approved by the City Planning Commission. Motion carried. Mr. Claude: Arnold presented estimated cost of opening Blue Island Avenue. ©.wN,!F-RS to /,e. r-om7A-GTE-D, Mr. Frank Wiggins, Chief of Volunteer Fire Department, met with the Council with a request that the Council appropriate money to Fire Department for recreational purposes. A petition of residents.and property owners on Foster Avenue and North Section street protesting the public nuisance located on S.E.corner of Section St. and Forster Avenue was presented to theCouncil.
