County of Baldwin
The City Council of the City of Fairhope met in regular session
at the City Hall, Monday, March 28, 1955 with the following
members present: Mayor E. B. Overton, City Manager C. B. Niemeyer,
Councilmen: M. 0. Berglin, L. E. Blatchford, R. H. Brown, R. C.
Macon and J. D. Mason.
The minutes of the previous regular meeting were read and approved
as read.
A report from the committee gppointed to check into extension of
City Limits found that approximately 1,000 people would be taken
into the City if the City Limits were extended to Houston Road.
Held for further study.
Councilman Macon reported that he had not received an answer
to his letter doncerning a Highway Patrolman in this area.
A letter of appreciation for the work done at the Sr. High School
from Mrs. Frankie Dunaway, Secretary of the Sr. High P.T. A.,
was read to the Council.
Captain Foster of Mobile wrote the Council in regards to the
operation of a pleasure boat across Mobile Bay.
Mr. C. F. Taylor, Director of the School of Organic Education,
requested the Council to confirm appointments to their Board
of Managers. Motion by Councilman Mason sec onded by Council-
man Brown that Mr. M. Dyson be appointed to the Board to May 1,
1956, Mr. M. 0. Berglin to May 1, 1958, and the third member to
be appointed to May 1, 1957 at the next meeting of the Council.
Motion carried.
At the request of Mr. K. Cain the Mayor appointed Councilman
Berglin and City Manager to check drainage on East Fels Avenue.
Mr. Hughes,representing the Chamber of Commerce, and,a group of
citizens met with the Council in regards to recreation program
to be financed by a cigarette tax or other similar tax and to
make the beach self-supporting. Several citizens gave their views
on the matter and after discussion the Mayor appointed Councilmen
Blatchford, Berglin and Mason as a committee to investigate the
possibility of setting up a Park and Recreation Board and the
means of financing same.
Mr. St. John, Electrical Engineer, gave a final report on work
that has been done in the Electric Department of the City. Motion
by Councilman Mason seconded by Councilman Brown that a letter of
commendation be given Mr. St. John for the outstanding work that
he has done f of the City of Fairhope. Motion carried.
It was duly moved and seconded that the meeting adjourn. Motion
Carried.
